Faculty Leaves

The Faculty Handbook (e.g. sections 3-D, 9-B, and 9-C) summarizes the academic leaves of absence for which faculty members may qualify. Specific questions about eligibility and requesting an academic leave should be directed to your school’s Faculty Affairs office.  Questions about  statutory leaves (e.g., disability, California Paid Family Leave, FMLA, CFRA, etc.) can be directed to your school’s Faculty Affairs office or to the Human Resources Service Center (call (213) 821-8100 or email uschr@usc.edu).

Family Leave

Faculty requesting leaves for family-related reasons should review the section on “Parental Leave” found on the USC Employees Gateway.

For statutory leaves, your Faculty Affairs partner can assist you with information regarding the academic portion of the leave (which requires that you use the Faculty Request for Leave Form) and questions about  statutory leaves can be directed to your school’s Faculty Affairs office or to the Human Resources Service Center (call (213) 821-8100 or email uschr@usc.edu).

Full-time faculty members are also eligible for USC Faculty Paid Parental Leave. Please work with your school Faculty Affairs office to complete the USC Faculty Paid Parental Leave Request form and to complete the necessary forms to support the concurrent statutory claim, if applicable. To access the Faculty Paid Parental Leave form, please visit USC Benefits for more information. If the USC Faculty Paid Parental Leave request is approved by your department chair and dean, the request is then forwarded to the Provost’s Office for review and approval.  If the form is Provost-approved, the form is then submitted to USC Disability for administration and coordination with any applicable statutory leaves. Chapter 3 of the Faculty Handbook provides additional information about USC Faculty Paid Parental Leave.

Disability

Information about what to do when requesting a leave for disability reasons can be found on the USC Benefits site.  Please work with your school Faculty Affairs partner to ensure that a Request for Leave form is submitted to the Provost’s Office for the corresponding academic leave.

Other Academic Leaves

All other requests for faculty academic leave should be submitted to the faculty member’s department chair using the Request for Leave form. Please work with your school Faculty Affairs partner to ensure that the Request for Leave form is completed and all supporting documentation collected. Your school Faculty Affairs office will assist you in obtaining the required school signatures and then will submitted the school-approved form to the Provost’s Office for Provost review and approval.
