For me, mentoring graduate students comes as a natural extension of doing research and of being engaged in the community of scholars. I convey that scholarship should be done with integrity, that one should set ambitious goals and have high standards, that persistent efforts are imperative and so is creativity, that specific topics should always be pursued with the big questions in mind.
I ask a lot of my students and I give them a lot of my time. I listen to them, I care, I try to adapt to their individual strengths and needs, I envision the great work that they are capable of doing. My proudest moments are when they succeed. It is immensely gratifying to see them do well professionally and personally.
