Mentoring students remains a deep privilege. Mentoring encourages the mentor to hone the art and skill of listening empathically and effectively, of presenting to students an unbiased and welcoming ear.
Mentoring also provides the mentor with an opportunity to open his or her ears to students who otherwise might go unnoticed. As one of my own remarkable mentors put it, mentoring enables the mentor to bring vast, luminous, yet previous unreachable worlds within reach of students; it simultaneously prompts students to reveal their own remarkably complex talents and abilities.
