Mentoring is a vital, even indispensable, element in a person’s education. I have come to see mentoring as an essential ingredient in the whole arena of professorial activity, one that should operate, either explicitly or implicitly, in every sphere of the academic enterprise: classroom lecturing, advising-tutoring, research direction, even scholarship.

I have found each arena of mentorship to provide unique challenges, but I have also found significant satisfaction in adopting a “mentor attitude” and seeking to let it permeate the whole spectrum of my professorial activity.
