I have been very fortunate to have benefited from great mentoring throughout my career. The advice of my mentors empowered me by helping me to understand that the same goal can be achieved by different strategies. My mentors demystified the ingredients for success in academia, and this understanding allowed me to focus my energy on specific steps toward my goals rather than on contemplating the uncertainties and obstacles. The mentoring I received gave me confidence by helping me to understand what my weaknesses and strengths are, how to work around the former and how to maximize the latter. Now mentoring my students and postdocs is one of the most satisfying aspects of my work. I feel that passing on my knowledge and experience makes a real impact on their careers.
