There should be no line between teaching and mentoring. The holistic engagement of learning requires complete consideration of an individual. Learning occurs through the classroom, but also through apprenticeships, experiences, and casual conversation.
As faculty we have a dedication to produce thinkers that will change the world. This quest for the improvement of humanity in all regards requires an investment at the level of the individual. The blurring of the boundaries of class times; to teach and engage beyond the podium; to work alongside in collaboration; these are all powerful models that provide a challenge to not just what we teach, but how we teach. It is a privilege to have this opportunity and responsibility at USC.
