The value of the mentor does not lie in his merits to teach or to show how, but rather to his awareness of the mentee’s potentials, guiding them along with “sweetness and delight” (Matthew Arnold and Jonathan Swift). Confucius also guided “students in accordance to their aptitudes.” However, a mentor needs good mentees and what he has achieved is in fact reflections of his achieving mentees more than of his own mentorship. In addition to those students who are still under my guidance at USC, I wish to thank those who recommended me for this award and are now already mentors teaching at universities in the States, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
