Mentoring is a natural outgrowth of teaching, but it implies perhaps a more focused and individual approach to helping others succeed and follow a path that you’ve already taken. For me, it’s mostly been a process of reflecting on what errors I made that I wish I had avoided; what choices I made that turned out to be helpful, and helping others be more reflective about their careers and choices than I was at the time. It’s so easy to simply plow forward, but having someone to help point out the risks and rewards of key choices can be very helpful. Mentoring is certainly one of the most satisfying elements of my job.
